ZipCheckup's U.S. Home Environmental Risk Compilation Now Openly Accessible on the Amazon Web Services Cloud

A normalized, address- and ZIP-level compilation of U.S. public environmental health records now openly accessible via the Registry of Open Data on AWS

(August 20, 2026) - ZipCheckup today announced that the U.S. Home Environmental Risk Compilation is now openly accessible on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud.

Better information sharing has the power to accelerate discoveries and improve the world around us. The research community can now access the U.S. Home Environmental Risk Compilation on AWS without needing to pay to store their own copies of the dataset. Researchers will only pay for the computing services they use, and do not need to purchase storage to start a project using the dataset. AWS, through its Open Data Sponsorship Program, is covering the costs of the storage and transfer of the data, so that it can be accessed and analyzed in the cloud by researchers around the world.

The primary sources behind this compilation are already public, but they are difficult to use at any scale. Consumer Confidence Reports, the annual water quality disclosures that U.S. utilities are required to publish, exist as scattered PDF files on thousands of separate utility websites. Lead service line inventories live in dozens of state portals, GIS layers and spreadsheets with incompatible schemas. This compilation does that aggregation once, openly, and carries per-record source provenance, so every value can be traced back to the document it came from.

The dataset covers machine-parsed Consumer Confidence Reports for more than 9,700 water systems for 2023 and 2024, including PFAS contaminant tables; lead service line records aggregated from 94 state and utility inventories, totaling 18.4 million address-level records; a ZIP-level summary layer covering more than 41,000 ZIP codes across 17 environmental risk categories; and companion layers built from EPA SDWIS, UCMR5, FEMA NRI, USGS, CDC and Census sources. Data is published in CSV, JSON and Parquet, with Parquet mirrors of the large collections provided for columnar workflows. Versioned archival snapshots are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license with DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19427201.

"Public environmental data in the United States is not secret, it is just unusable," said Artem Akulov, founder of ZipCheckup. "A family that wants to know what is in their water is told to find a PDF on a utility website and interpret a table of contaminant limits. A researcher who wants to study a thousand of those utilities has to do that a thousand times. We did the aggregation once and published the result with its sources attached, so anyone can check our work against the original documents."

The AWS Open Data Sponsorship Program covers the cost of storage and egress for publicly available, high-value, cloud-optimized datasets. AWS works with data providers to democratize access to data by making it available for analysis on AWS; develop new cloud-native techniques, formats, and tools that lower the cost of working with data; and encourage the development of communities that benefit from access to shared datasets. Through the program, AWS has democratized access to petabytes of data, including satellite imagery, climate and weather data, genomic data, and data used for natural language processing.
