How we compute this

We map EPA Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) violations to ZIP codes by primary service area and count the ZIP codes with at least one violation whose return-to-compliance status is not yet recorded. The figure recomputes with each SDWIS extract.

An unresolved status is a regulatory record state, not a real-time measure of water quality. Many violations are monitoring or reporting lapses, and resolution can lag the underlying corrective action.

We translate EPA’s records rather than estimate them. A ZIP code counts once if any of its mapped systems carries an unresolved violation.
