Tornadoes by ZIP Code
Data current as of December 2024 — recomputed by ZipCheckup from federal data each build.
Over the decade from 2015 through 2024, NOAA's Storm Events database logged 14,898 tornado events across 2,527 U.S. counties in 51 states, with 480 direct deaths and 6,036 direct injuries, as of December 2024. A tornado that crosses county lines is counted once per county, so this is a count of county-level events, not unique storms.

By state
We report two independent facts side by side and do not rank states. A larger count reflects the size of a state's inventory and its reporting activity, not a judgment about water safety.

How we compute this
We use NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information Storm Events database and count every event recorded as a tornado at the county level between 2015 and 2024. Over that decade the database logs 14,898 county tornado events across 2,527 counties in 51 states, with 480 direct deaths and 6,036 direct injuries.
A single tornado that travels across more than one county is recorded once in each county it touches, so our national figure counts county-level tornado events rather than unique storms. We report only direct deaths and injuries — those the National Weather Service attributes directly to the tornado.
Counts are grouped by state and recompute on every build; the underlying records cover the years 2015 through 2024. Counties with no recorded tornadoes in that window are omitted, never shown as zero, and a small number of events in U.S. territories are included in the national totals but not assigned to a state.
Frequently asked questions
How many tornadoes hit the United States in the last decade?
NOAA's Storm Events database logged 14,898 county-level tornado events from 2015 through 2024 — across 2,527 counties in 51 states — causing 480 direct deaths and 6,036 direct injuries, as of December 2024. Does a county's tornado count mean my ZIP code is at risk?
A county's tornado history is one signal of exposure, not a forecast. The 14,898 county tornado events recorded from 2015 through 2024 cluster heavily in some states and are rare in others. ZipCheckup reports the recent count for each county from NOAA's Storm Events database, as of December 2024.
