As of 2026-09-03, 251,574 stores are authorized to accept SNAP across 23,957 ZIP codes, and in 8,246 of those ZIP codes no supermarket or grocery store accepts SNAP, only convenience stores or specialty shops.

By state

We report two independent facts side by side and do not rank states. A larger count reflects the size of a state's inventory and its reporting activity, not a judgment about water safety.

How we compute this

We use USDA's historical SNAP Retailer Locator data and keep only stores that are currently authorized, meaning a store whose authorization has no end date. That leaves 251,574 active stores, which we group by the ZIP code each store sits in, covering 23,957 ZIP codes across 53 states and jurisdictions.

A ZIP code counts as having a grocery option when at least one active store is a supermarket, super store, or large, medium, or small grocery store, or a combination grocery. 15,711 ZIP codes meet that bar. The remaining 8,246 have SNAP stores but no grocery store of any size, and 2,785 are served by convenience stores alone.

These are counts of stores located inside a ZIP code, not a measure of food access, because a resident may shop at a store in a neighboring ZIP code. A ZIP code with no authorized store is left out rather than recorded as a zero, and leading-zero ZIP codes are restored. The figures recompute on every build from the latest USDA file.
