How we compute this

We aggregate violation counts from EPA's Safe Drinking Water Information System per water system and map them to ZIP codes by primary service area. The count includes all violation types on record.

A violation is a regulatory event, not a measure of present-day water quality. Violations include monitoring and reporting lapses alongside health-based exceedances, and many are later resolved.

We translate EPA's records rather than estimate them. The figure recomputes whenever the underlying SDWIS extract is refreshed.
