The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a Red Flag Warning covering Sunday afternoon and evening for very hot temperatures combining with gusty southwest winds and low relative humidity all in an area with ongoing minimal rainfall over the last few weeks. This Red Flag Warning is in effect noon to 9 PM CDT Sunday. The Fire Weather Watch for Monday afternoon and evening remains in effect.

  • AFFECTED AREA...In Minnesota, Koochiching, North St. Louis, Northern Cook, Northern Lake, North Itasca and Central St. Louis.

  • WINDS...Southwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

  • RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 30 percent Sunday and as low as 23 percent Monday.

  • IMPACTS...The rapid spread of any fires may occur due to the forecast weather conditions and dry fuels per guidance from local land management agencies.

What to do: A Red Flag Warning covering Sunday afternoon and evening means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and hot temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks has issued a Fire Weather Watch for hot temperatures, breezy winds and low relative humidity, which is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening.

  • AFFECTED AREA...In Minnesota, Roseau, Lake Of The Woods, East Marshall, North Beltrami, North Clearwater, South Beltrami, South Clearwater and Hubbard.

  • WINDS...Southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

  • RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 30 percent.

  • IMPACTS...Any fires that ignite will spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

  • WHAT...Heat index values up to 101 each afternoon.

  • WHERE...Portions of west central Minnesota and north central and northeast South Dakota.

  • WHEN...Until 7 PM CDT Tuesday.

  • IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

What to do: Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
